This week, the second half of the 54th annual World Series of Poker continues apace with events in Seven Card Stud, 2-7 Lowball and Super Turbo Bounty formats. In the last week before the WSOP Main Event dominates the schedule, there is the welcome return of the classic Ladies Championship and Super Seniors Championship, as well as some epic events such as the Colossus and Crazy 8’s. Who’s got a chance of sealing more gold before then and which events should you play this week in Las Vegas?
Who Could Claim Glory in Continuing Events?
An incredible seven events are poised to hand out bracelets in the next couple of days, with the preceding weekend setting up several final tables. In the final day of the H.O.R.S.E. Championship on Monday, Mike Gorodinsky heads to the line with some lead, holding almost double five of his opponents’ chips, with only the former WSOP Main Event finalist Alex Livingston holding a decent chunk more than half his stack. You can read more about how yesterday’s epic events played out here.
In the final day of the Seniors Championship, there are also seven combatants going to a – slightly more civilised than normal – war. Billy Baxter is third in chips and hopes to win his eighth WSOP bracelet but he starts some way behind the leader Dan Heimiller, who won a huge hand late on the penultimate day to set up his chance of glory.
Day 3 of the Millionaire Maker will take place with Joey Weissman in pole position. The event, which saw a record attendance in a live poker tournament with a $1,500 buy-in, will crown a seven-figure winner after two more days at the felt. The PLO High Roller Event #57 saw strong performances from John ‘World’ Hennigan and Chance Kornuth on Day 1, but there is a long way to go and at least two poker legends seem to be at every table.
Of the final 18 players in the Seven Card Stud Event #55, Mike Matusow’s name sticks out. Starting in seventh position, can ‘The Mouth’ win his first WSOP title in a decade and the fifth of his career? The Salute to Warriors Event #56 and NLHE Six-Max Event #58 only just completed Day 1s but are already racing towards the money at the time of going to press. Irish poker hero Dara O’Kearney rides well in the first, while Maria Ho is similarly gunning for her first WSOP bracelet in the latter.
Super Seniors and Ladies the Stars
The bulk of the action in the first half of Week #5 of this year’s WSOP features a wide variety of game variants. There are plenty of different games to play, with the No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw event costing $1,500 and kicking off on Monday, the Mixed NLHE/PLO Event #62 the same price to enter on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship event takes place. It’s one of three Championship events to take place this week with a $10,000 buy-in and inflated prizepools as a result. The others are the No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship which begins on Thursday and the PLO Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship which kicks off on Sunday.
No Limit events include the Super Seniors, which takes place a week or so after the Seniors Championship kicked off and broke records. Could the same happen in the Super Seniors? If you’re 60 and over, get along. There’s also the appearance of the Ladies Championship which, as ever, costs $1,000 for female players to enter and $10,000 for any man foolish enough to think that he’s funny when he’s not. With a NLHE Super Turbo Bounty taking place on the same day but kicking off two hours later, there’s something for everyone on Thursday.
The Colossus is Back… and Two Crazy Online Events
This week sees the welcome return of another ‘weekend warrior’ type event, with the $400-entry Colossus event having Day 1 flights on both Friday and Saturday. Last year’s winner Paul Hizer banked an amazing top prize of $414,490 – life-changing money for an entry fee that won’t break the bank.
As well as the Colossus, two online events take place this week and both caught our eye for value. On Tuesday, the $888-entry ‘Crazy 8’s’ event is always fun and will likely give away a record top prize for first given the swollen attendances across the board this week. That starts at 3.30pm, so keep an eye on the online event times as they start at different times to the events kicking off inside the Horseshoe and Paris casinos in downtown Las Vegas on the world-famous Sin City Strip.
The other online event taking place this week kicks off on Sunday and also starts at 3.30pm sharp. The $500 NLHE Deepstack is well worth playing and for a value buy-in may well provide you with a huge top prize if you can grab the gold bracelet that comes with every online WSOP event. If you crash out early, you can console yourself with the fact that Sunday night, July 2nd into Monday morning July 3rd is a little like Christmas morning for poker players, with next Monday seeing Day 1a of what should be the biggest WSOP Main Event of all-time kick off.
If you’re at the felt this week at the World Series of Poker, then we hope you run well and play even better. If you do, well, gold could be yours. If you want to share action or even buy a piece of someone whose play you admire then head to our PokerStake staking platform, it couldn’t be simpler to get started!
