This week, the WSOP Main Event kicks off at the 54th annual World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris casinos in Las Vegas. With plenty of other events to get your teeth into as well, it will be a life-changing week for many players as the great and good battle to reach the latter stages of what could be the biggest-ever poker tournament held in Sin City. From No Limit Hold’em to PLO, via mixed games galore, this week is like Christmas Day to poker players at the WSOP.
Who Could Claim Glory in Continuing Events?
As you might imagine, only a handful of events are still in progress with the WSOP Main Event about to kick off. In Event #70, the $400-entry Colossus saw 1,989 players reach Day 2 from an incredible 15,983 entries. On Day 2, that four-figure number was brought down to just 80 survivors, with names such as the current chip leader Jesse Kertland and stars of the game Pete Chen, Konstantinos Nanos, James Dempsey, Ian Steinman, and Jason Wheeler all still chasing the $501,120 top prize.
In Event #73, the Mixed Big Bet event, Jon Turner leads the remaining 24 players with a top prize of $190k up for grabs. Mixed game legends Erick Lindgren, Benny Glaser and Stuart Rutter are all inside the top 10 and hoping to win their first bracelet of the summer.
On the same day that event reached Day 2, the opening day of action was playing out in Event #75, the $10,000-entry PLO Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship. Michael Banducci, Michael Wang, Taylor Paur and Cliff Josephy all feature in the top five stacks, with Dylan Weisman and Dzmitry Urbanovich challenging from top 10 positions.
Lastly, but by no means least, the $1,000 buy-in Mini Main Event (which shares many traits of its more glamorous big brother event) kicked off yesterday with a mammoth 5,257 players. They were trimmed to a Day 2 field of 426 by the close of that opening day’s 22 levels, with Indian player Avneesh Munjal (3,250,000) in the box seat to win the $549,555 top prize.
The WSOP Main Event Kicks Off!
Monday sees the start of the poker tournament that all players want to win. The $10,000-entry WSOP Main Event World Championship is the big one, with a record crowds expected to play this year. Back in 2006, Jamie Gold won $12 million in the largest field ever seen, 8,773 players pitched up. If the official attendance record is broken in 2023, then one player in the 2023 Main Event will win entry into the World Championship for life!
Last year, Norwegian poker pro Espen Jorstad won the World Championship for an incredible $10 million payday, only a week after winning his first bracelet in the Tag Team event.
This year’s Main Event is going to be phenomenally popular and as has already been shown at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris casinos, the venue can cope with thousands upon thousands. In 2006, record numbers were set on four opening days and the same numbers are scheduled to take place this year.
Bumper Week Online and Lucky 7’s Takes Off
While all eyes will obviously be on the WSOP Main Event, there are four online WSOP events and they’re not to be missed. The first online event is a big one, as the High Roller Championship kicks off at 3.30pm on Monday Vegas time and costs $5,300 to play. Tuesday and Wednesday are taken up with Main Event days alone, but on Thursday, there’s a $400-entry turbo event taking place online.
On both weekend days, there are online events, too. The $1,000 NLHE Online Championship kicks off and a day later, the Online Deepstack Championship is the star, costing a lower $600 to play. Both events are sure to get plenty of players, especially those not fortunate enough to progress from Day 1 of the Main Event.
The Lucky 7’s event is on during the second half of the week, costing $777 to play and seeing three separate Day 1 flights. There’s also a $1,500 PLO Bounty event taking place from Friday onwards, so mixed game fans certainly aren’t totally left out this week.
